雪堂曰。予在龍門時。靈源住太平有司以非意擾之。靈源與先師書曰。直可以行道。殆不可為。枉可以住持。誠非我志。不如放意於千巖萬壑之間。日飽芻粟以遂餘生。復何惓惓乎。不旬浹間有黃龍之命。乃乘興歸江西（聰首座記聞）。

Xuetang said: "When I was at Longmen, Lingyuan resided at Taiping, and the authorities troubled him with unreasonable demands. Lingyuan wrote in a letter to my late teacher: 'Acting uprightly allows one to practice the Way; to act in peril is impossible. Residing as abbot through crooked compromise is truly not my wish. It would be better to give free rein to my mind among the thousands of crags and myriad ravines, eating my fill of grass and grain each day to live out the rest of my life; what more should I yearn for?' In less than ten days, a call came from Huanglong, whereupon he seized the opportunity and returned to Jiangxi."
