3.47

妙喜曰。諸方舉長老。須舉守道而恬退者。舉之則志節愈堅。所至不破壞常住成就叢林。亦主法者救今日之弊也。且詐佞狡猾之徒不知羞恥。自能諂奉勢位結托于權貴之門。又何須舉（與竹菴書）。

Miaoxi said: “When the various quarters recommend an elder, they must recommend one who guards the Way and is serene and retiring. If such a person is recommended, his resolve and integrity will become all the firmer, and wherever he goes he will not destroy the permanent property of the saṃgha, but rather bring success to the monastic grove; this is also how those who direct the Dharma can remedy the evils of today. Moreover, deceitful, flattering, and cunning fellows know no shame; they can naturally fawn upon those of power and position and attach themselves to the gates of the mighty. Why would there be any need to recommend them?” (Letter to Zhu'an).
