3.54

張侍郎子韶謂妙喜曰。夫禪林首座之職乃選賢之位。今諸方不問賢不肖。例以此為僥倖之津途。亦主法者失也。然則像季固難得其人。若擇其履行稍優才德稍備。識廉恥節義者居之。與夫險進之徒亦差勝矣（可菴集）。

Vice Minister Zhang Zishao said to Miaoxi: “The position of head monk in a Chan monastery is a seat for selecting the worthy. Today the various quarters do not ask whether one is worthy or unworthy, routinely taking this as a stepping-stone for opportunistic advancement; this is also a failing of those who direct the Dharma. That being so, in the semblance age it is indeed difficult to find the right person; yet if one selects those whose conduct is slightly superior, whose talent and virtue are somewhat complete, and who recognize shame, integrity, and righteousness to occupy it, it would still be somewhat better than those reckless strivers” (Ke'an ji).
