4.26

拙菴曰。大凡與官員論道酬酢。須是剗去知解勿令他坐在窠窟裏。直要單明向上一著子。妙喜先師嘗言。士大夫相見有問即對。無問即不可。又須是箇中人。始得此語有補於時。不傷住持之體。切宜思之（與興化普菴書）。

Zhuo'an said: "Generally, when discussing the Way and interacting with officials, one must cut away intellectual understanding and not let them sit in a rut. One must directly clarify solely the matter of the supreme. My late master Miaoxi once said: 'When meeting with scholar-officials, reply if asked; if not asked, one must not. Furthermore, one must be an insider before these words can be of benefit to the times and not harm the substance of an abbot.' You must earnestly consider this." (Letter to Pu'an of Xinghua)
