4.40

自得輝和尚曰。大凡衲子誠而向正。雖愚亦可用。佞而懷邪。雖智終為害。大率林下人操心不正。雖有才能而終不可立矣（見簡堂書）。

Venerable Zide Hui said, "In general, if a patch-robed monk is sincere and tends toward correctness, though he may be foolish, he can still be used; if he is flattering and harbors deviousness, though he may be clever, he will ultimately do harm. In general, if a person of the monastic groves has a mind that is not upright, though he may have talent and ability, he ultimately cannot stand firm." (Seen in the letter to Jiantang)
