In the third year after Hu'an moved to Jiao Shan—which was the fourth day of the eighth month of the sixth year of the Chunxi reign era—he first manifested a slight illness, then penned a personal letter and [sent it] along with an inkstone to bid farewell to the prefect and vice-minister Master Zeng Dai. At midnight he passed away. The master lamented him with a verse that said: / 'Lightly fluttering, a single shoe chases the western wind; / Not a single thing is inside the cloth bag. / What use will there be in leaving behind Tao Hong? / This old fellow has no brush with which to judge empty space.' (Account of Conduct).
