Supervising Secretary Master Wu said to Jiantang: 'In ancient times, people turned their minds to ashes and extinguished their wisdom amidst a thousand crags and ten thousand gullies, drinking from streams and feeding on trees as if they had completely abandoned any thought of merit and fame. Yet suddenly they received an edict of purple clay, or concealed their radiance and hid their traces beneath the menial labor of carrying stakes; from the beginning they had no thought of honor and prominence, yet in the end they took their place in the ranks of the Transmission of the Lamp. Therefore, when gained without contrivance, their Way is great and their virtue is vast; when planned with seeking, their fame is base and their aspiration is narrow. Only the Master's capacity is serene and far-reaching, following in the footsteps of the ancients; thus you could dwell quietly at Guanshan for seventeen years, ultimately becoming a fine vessel of the monastic grove. The monks of today have nothing they hold to within, and pursue the bustling splendor without; they have little far-sighted planning and lack the broad picture. Hence they cannot support and assist the ancestral teaching. This is why they fall far short of the Master.' (Recorded Hear-says of Attendant Gao).
