Shun Laofu said: “In transmitting and maintaining this Way, what is valued in all things is reality. Distinguishing the heterodox from the orthodox and casting away deluded sentiments is the reality of governing the mind. Recognizing causes and effects and understanding transgressions and blessings is the reality of one's personal conduct. Propagating the Way and virtue and receiving visitors from all directions is the reality of an abbot. Assessing abilities to appoint duty-holders is the reality of employing people. Observing words and deeds to determine approval or disapproval is the reality of seeking worthies. If one does not preserve these realities and merely flaunts an empty reputation, it is of no benefit to the principle. Therefore, in personal conduct one must only be sincere and genuine. If one holds to it without wavering, one can remain unified through both ease and adversity.” (*Two Matters from the Collection of Tanran'an*)
