Master Yuan said: "Among the essentials of an abbot, nothing comes before discerning what to adopt and what to reject. The ultimate outcome of adopting and rejecting is determined within; the sprouting of safety or peril is settled without. Yet safety is not the safety of a single day, nor is peril the peril of a single day; both arise from gradual accumulation, which must be examined. If one acts as abbot with the Way and virtue, one accumulates the Way and virtue; if one acts as abbot with propriety and righteousness, one accumulates propriety and righteousness; if one acts as abbot through extortion and exploitation, one accumulates resentment and hatred. When resentment and hatred accumulate, those inside and outside become estranged and turn away; when propriety and righteousness accumulate, those inside and outside are harmonious and pleased; when the Way and virtue accumulate, those inside and outside are moved to submit. Therefore, when the Way, virtue, propriety, and righteousness are pervasive, those inside and outside are joyful; when extortion, exploitation, resentment, and hatred reach their extremity, those inside and outside are sorrowful. The resonance of sorrow and joy brings the corresponding response of misfortune or fortune."
