Baiyun said, “I often see patch-robed monks who have never turned their minds to far-reaching and great plans. I fear that the monastic groves will become feeble and shallow from now on. My late master Yangqi often said that superiors and inferiors settling for temporary ease is the greatest malady of the Dharma gate. Formerly, when I lived in retirement at the Guizong study hall, I browsed and read the scriptures and histories no less than several hundred times. My eyes saw the bamboo slips and texts wear out to the utmost. Yet every time I opened a volume, there was always newly attained understanding. Considering it by this, study never disappoints a person like this.” (Baiyun Veritable Records)
