Lingyuan said to Juefan: 'I hear that during your time in the south, you investigated the *Śūraṅgama-sūtra* and produced special commentaries on it; this is not what I hoped of you. Literary learning cannot penetrate a person's original source of nature; it merely obstructs the wisdom-eye of former buddhas for later students. The ailment lies in relying on others to form interpretations, thereby blocking one's own gate of awakening. Providing fuel for the tongue may overcome shallow learning, but expanding the spiritual dynamic can never attain wondrous realization through this. Therefore, conduct and understanding often become divergent, and everyday sight and hearing become all the more obscured.' (*Zhangjiang ji*).
