Lingyuan said, "My elder Dharma-brother Dongshan was uniquely endowed by nature; his speech and silence were in accord with the proper measure. When he ordinarily gave forth statements and phrases, their principle was naturally superior. When those in various regions wished to emulate him, if they did not resort to strange, worldly expressions, they were vulgar and crude, and ultimately none could equal him. Even seeking among the ancients, one could not find his match. Yet he still guided living beings with a humble radiance, no less intensely than hunger or thirst. He once said, 'I have no Dharma to give to Keqin and the other sons; I am truly a sinner in the Dharma gate.'"
