When Gao'an resided at Yunju, whenever he heard that a monk was ill and moved to the Longevity Hall, he would sigh and lament as if it were happening to himself. Morning and evening he inquired after him, even boiling and decocting [medicines] with his own hands, never giving food without tasting it first. If the weather turned somewhat cold, he would pat the monk on the back and say, 'Is your clothing too thin?' If it was sweltering summer, he would observe his complexion and say, 'Is it too hot?' If unfortunately the monk could not be saved, regardless of whether he possessed anything among the permanent property of the saṃgha, he would send him off with full ritual. If an administrator made excuses, Gao'an would scold him, saying, 'In the past, Baizhang established the permanent property of the saṃgha for the old and sick. Are you never going to fall ill and die?' Discerning people everywhere praised his character. When he retired from Yunju and passed through Tiantai, nearly fifty monks followed him; among those who could not go, some wept bitterly as they parted. Such was the extent to which his virtue moved others (from *Shantang Xiaocan*).
