Zhantang said to Miaoxi: 'To practice Chan, one must have lofty and far-reaching discernment and a transcendent resolve. In uttering words and conducting affairs, maintain trustworthiness toward others. Do not follow power and profit to compromise your nature, so that you are not manipulated or swayed by the whims of your peers.' (*Baofeng jiwen*).
