Wan'an said: “When my late teacher was transferred to Meiyang, there were some among the patch-robed monks who whispered criticisms. Head Seat Yin said, ‘Generally, in evaluating a person, one should seek the absence of fault within their faults; how could one seek fault where there is no fault? To suspect his outward traces without examining his heart—truly, how can this comfort the public opinion of the monastic grove? Furthermore, Miaoxi’s the Way and virtue, talent, and capacity stem from his natural disposition; in establishing himself and handling affairs, he adheres solely to righteousness. His magnanimity certainly surpasses that of other men. Now that the Creator oppresses him, there must be a reason for it. How can one fail to know that this will be a blessing for the Dharma gate in other times?’ Those who heard this never raised discussions again (Zhilin ji).”
