Wan'an said: “When the ancients ascended the hall, they first brought up the main outline of the great Dharma to examine the great assembly, and when students came forward to seek instruction, questions and answers took shape. People nowadays fabricate four-line poems that lose the rhyme and call them ‘hooking words’; one person steps forward from the assembly and loudly chants a couplet of an ancient poem, calling it ‘taunting the ranks.’ How vulgar and vile! How vulgar and vile! It is lamentable and distressing. The predecessors were mindful of the great matter of saṃsāra, resolving doubts before the assembly; once enlightened, they did not give rise to thoughts of production and cessation.”
