Zhuo'an said to Ye'an: "Chancellor Layman Ziyan said: 'My late master Miaoxi in his lifetime gave precedence to the Way, virtue, integrity, righteousness, and courage. He could be approached with affection but not estranged; he could be drawn close to but not coerced; he could be killed but not disgraced. His dwelling was not decadent, and his food and drink were not lavish. Facing saṃsāra and calamity, he regarded them as nothing. He was precisely what is called a Gan Jiang or Mo Ye blade, hard to contend with; one only feared it might be nicked.' Later things were just as Ziyan had said." (Record of Heard Matters of Huan'an)
