Zide said, "Before fine jade is cut open, it is no different from tiles and stones; before a renowned steed gallops, it is mixed among tired nags. When it is cut open and polished, and when it gallops and is tested, then jade and stone, nag and steed are distinguished. Now when the worthy virtue of a patch-robed monk is not yet employed, mixed in the crowd of people, how can it be distinguished after all? It relies on men of high discernment to recommend him through public acclaim, entrust him with official responsibilities, test him by his talent and ability, and hold him responsible for accomplishing tasks; then he will be vastly different from the mediocre sort." (Letter to Huo'an)
