Shui'an said: 'Formerly when I traveled to Yunju, I saw Gao'an give an evening instruction, saying, "The supreme Way is direct and upright, not conforming to human sentiment. One must have a sincere heart and rectified thoughts, and not engage in artifice or bias. Artifice borders on deceit and flattery; bias is not balanced and upright. Neither conforms to the supreme Way." Privately I thought his words were reasonable, and so I applied myself diligently to practice them. When I met my late master Fozhi, I first experienced a vast and great awakening, and was then able not to fail the aspiration of a lifetime's itinerant practice.' (Letter to Yuetang)
