Vimalakīrti said: "The liberation of all Buddhas should be sought within the mental activities of sentient beings." Why is this? The Jin translation of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: "The mind is like a master painter, creating the various five aggregates. Throughout all worlds, there is nothing that is not made from the mind. As the mind is, so is the Buddha; as the Buddha is, so are sentient beings. Mind, Buddha, and sentient beings—these three are without distinction." Since it is the mother of sentient beings and Buddhas, it is also the source of the dependent and primary [retributions]. Thus the Śūraṅgama Sūtra says: "All phenomena that arise are merely manifestations of the mind. All causes and effects, worlds, and dust motes take the mind as their substance." If one wishes to say the mind exists, it is like the sound of a harp: seek it, and it cannot be seen. If one wishes to say it does not exist, it is like the sound of a harp: pluck it, and it echoes. It neither exists nor does not exist; the subtle lies therein. Thus the Pratyutpanna Samādhi Sūtra says: "All Buddhas attain liberation from the mind. The mind is pure and named unstained. The five destinies are spotless and do not receive form. One who understands this accomplishes the Great Way." If one complies with these ten gates, those above practicing and those below emulating without weariness to the very end, then the teachings of our Buddha can be extended to future generations. If one considers it otherwise, the ancestral way will surely be lost. I earnestly hope descendants will read and take warning from this.
