Regarding relying on sūtras of definitive meaning and not relying on sūtras of non-definitive meaning: These two kinds of sūtras are both the valid testimony of the Sage's words. All who enter the Way should first understand them; then nothing will be obstructed and not penetrate, and all doubts will be resolved. It is only because the dispositions and consciousnesses of living beings are deep or shallow, sharp or dull, differing from one another, that the Great Sage was led to preach differently according to their sentiments. Yet, based on the Supreme Way, it is simply one's own mind. Therefore, a sūtra says: 'Regarding the upper and lower dharmas of the three realms, I preach that they are solely the mind.' This clarifies the mind with respect to the circumstantial reward of the world. It also says: 'Suchness, the true limit, nirvāṇa, the dharmadhātu, and the various mind-made bodies—the Buddha preaches that they are solely the measure of the mind.' This clarifies the mind based on the essence of supramundane dharmas. Ultimately reaching the utmost reality, one fully arrives at this source. Following the flow to respond to capacities, one returns to the definitive meaning as the source.
