The Commentary cites the Futian jing: "First, generating the mind to go forth in order to embrace the Way; second, abandoning one's fine appearance in order to accord with the Dharma robes; third, relinquishing bodily life in order to honor and revere the Way; fourth, forever severing ties with family and loved ones, having neither partiality nor indifference; fifth, aspiring to seek the Mahāyāna in order to liberate others." The Subcommentary states: "These five virtues are the great essentials of going forth. The fivefold assembly equally observes them; it is not only for the junior assembly. One practices them throughout life; it is not only upon first receiving [the precepts]." The Commentary on the Vinaya Deeds also states: "These virtues apply from beginning to end to all five assemblies. All are fit to receive material support and serve as models for humans and devas. Therefore, let them be recited and upheld; do not look lightly upon the received substance or upon the form and clothing."
