I have a water strainer, made according to the correct method: fine bleached silk forms its bottom, and forged iron serves as its frame. When using it to filter, one must inspect it most thoroughly; when releasing [the creatures] back, one must be strictly careful not to harm them. One should know that our Buddha's benevolence and compassion did not abandon even the tiniest creatures; this enables our assembly, in what we drink and use, to be fortunate enough to avoid lingering calamities. Within the boundaries of a single monastery's diocese, superiors and inferiors are all regulated by it; whenever traveling within half a yojana, back and forth, one must carry it along. In the world, many treat it with slight and neglect—who investigates whether it is right or wrong? Some hear of it but do not make one, sneering at it as a minor path; some make it but do not use it, merely hanging it in their thatched huts. This stems from having no compassion within, while outwardly indulging in carelessness and wildness, blocking the ford and path for beginners, and harming the discipline and order of our teaching. You should preserve sincerity, maintain and guard it, and exert all strength to expand and spread it. How could it merely be that the four forms of birth rely on it? It also makes the triratna shine all the more brightly.
