Seeking fame not through virtue is called ill fame. Seeking profit not through the Way is called ill profit. Ill fame is abhorred by the wise; ill profit is feared for the future karma it brings. 'Superior virtue is not virtuous' was Laozi's admonishing word; the four wrong livelihoods and five wrong livelihoods are strictly forbidden in the Śākya gate. Rather lose through truth than feign through gain. The petty man runs after the reputation of ill fame; the gentleman preserves the benefit of great profit. If blessings are meager and wealth is vast, wealth will surely bring disaster; if virtue is slight and responsibility is great, responsibility will swiftly bring harm. The ancients only sought to realize the mind, not to promote the body. Do not conceal another's worthiness; do not boast of your own. If it is thus, then one knows one's destiny and harmonizes with the Way, preserving oneself throughout a lifetime.
