2.24

You have already left home, departing forever from those who gave you life.
Having shaved your hair and altered your countenance, you put on the Dharma robes and cultivate practice.
On the day you took leave of your kin, superiors and inferiors wept and shed tears.
Severing love to honor the Way, your intention soared above the Great Clear Heaven.
You should comply with this aspiration, cultivating and illuminating the scriptures and the Way.
How is it that with no [spiritual] mind, you still dwell on form and sound?
Passing the whole day in idleness, your scriptural studies are not accomplished.
Virtuous conduct daily diminishes, and accumulated defilements overflow.
Your teachers and friends are put to shame, and ordinary folk treat you with contempt.
Leaving home in such a manner, you merely disgrace your own name.
Now, therefore, I instruct and encourage you: you ought to be devoted and refined!
