2.26

You have already left home, casting off the mundane and taking leave of the sovereign.
You should encourage yourself, with aspirations reaching the blue clouds.
Giving no regard to wealth or sex, you do not flock with the worldly.
Valuing neither gold nor jade, you regard only the Way as precious.
Restraining yourself and maintaining integrity, relish bitterness and delight in poverty.
Advancing in virtue to deliver yourself, you will also be able to deliver others.
How is it that you have changed your integrity, hurrying about in the mundane dust?
Sitting without warming the mat, galloping east and west,
Worse than corvée labor, dragged about by county magistrates.
Without understanding the scriptures and the Way, precept-virtue remains incomplete.
Friends mock you, and fellow students abandon you.
Leaving home in such a manner, you merely squander your natural lifespan.
Now, therefore, I instruct and encourage you: you should each take pity on yourselves!
