Regarding relying on the Dharma and not relying on the person: A person exists only through emotion, whereas the Dharma is the norm. The correct principle of emptiness of nature (emptiness of nature applies to both the Lesser and Greater [Vehicles]) is in its essence free from error and falsity; one takes this Dharma as the reliance of the saddharma. The ultimate teaching of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra thoroughly clarifies this path (the Nirvāṇa says: Relying on the Dharma means the dharmatā; not relying on the person means the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas). If one can reverse that mundane mind, rely on the standards of the sages, conceal the mind while engaging in affairs, know that the non-[virtuous] is empty in nature, and take hold of this mind as the path: one part of knowing errors clearly accords with the principle of emptiness, and one part of contemplating with revulsion clearly goes against conditioned affairs. Securing the mind in this manner is called partial cultivation and approach toward the true path of dharmatā.
