I, [name], through karmic hindrances and demonic interference, have a confused and disordered spirit. In what I encounter, my faculties are dull, and delusive thoughts naturally arise: omissions and confusions, inversions and duplications; facing the text, I indulge my own views, with mistaken characters and incorrect phrases, violating the correct sounds of clear and voiced tones, clinging to heterodox views in my interpretations; or worldly affairs seize my resolve so that my mind is not on the sūtra; answering queries or everyday manners cause interruptions and breaks; reciting for long periods brings indolence, with anger and resentment aroused over incidents; strict purity becomes tainted by grime; solemn respect turns into irreverence and slight; the body, mouth, or items used are impure; dress and manners are discourteous; offerings do not accord with ritual, and the place is improper; rolling and unrolling are rough and tangled, leading to drops, stains, and damage—all kinds of lack of concentration and sincerity, bringing great shame and great fear. I respectfully pray that all buddhas and bodhisattvas, all noble assemblies throughout the dharmadhātu and space, and the dharma-protecting benevolent deities, devas, dragons, and others, will with compassion and pity cleanse and wash away my sins and faults, and make the merits of sūtra recitation fully complete and accomplished. As for what I turn toward in my heart's aspiration, I also worry about errors in translation and polish, mistakes in annotations, deviations in oral transmission, errors in pronunciation and gloss, faults in collation and alteration, and mistakes in copying and engraving. For their masters and those persons, I repent on behalf of all. Relying on the Buddha's spiritual power, may these offenses be eliminated; may the wheel of Dharma constantly turn to deliver and succor sentient beings.
