The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states: 'The bodhisattva never tires of only three things: first, never tiring of making offerings to the Buddha; second, never tiring of listening to the Dharma; third, never tiring of providing for the saṅgha.' Although contemporary students have not yet reached the stage of a bodhisattva, there are some who reject cause and effect; moreover, they do not investigate the subtle words of the former sages. Little do they know that principle is phenomenon and phenomenon is principle, that phenomenon and principle are completely interfused, naturally as it is. Therefore, Yongming said: 'Do you intend to make a leech despise the volume of the ocean, or make honey eclipse the sunlight?'
