7.12

Formerly, the Lion King / Took the pure white Dharma as his body. / In the empty valley of the ultimate truth, / He exerted his vigor and roared. / With mindfulness as the bow and luminous wisdom as the sharp arrows, / Clothed in the armor of compassion, / His power of patience unshakable, / He directly crushed the army of the demon king. / Constantly delighting in samādhi, / Taking ambrosia as delicious food / And the flavor of liberation as broth, / He disported in the three vehicles, / Abode securely in omniscient wisdom, / And turned the unsurpassed wheel of the Dharma. / Now, I voice true words conforming to the real nature, / Appraising and examining with body, speech, and mind, / Truly repenting: / From the past onward, due to delusion, I had desire; / Drinking alcohol and eating meat, I increased craving and thirst, / Entering the thicket of false views and failing to attain liberation. / Now before the Buddha, I make a great vow: / I vow that from this day forth, to the end of all future cosmic periods, / I will never engage in sexual misconduct again. / I vow that from this day forth, to the end of all future cosmic periods, / I will never drink alcohol again. / I vow that from this day forth, to the end of all future cosmic periods, / I will never eat meat again. / If I should again engage in sexual misconduct, may I fall into hell, / Abiding in the pit of fire for immeasurable kalpas; / For all the suffering retribution that sentient beings ought to receive due to lustful confusion, / May I suffer it in their stead. / If I should again drink alcohol, may I fall into hell, / Drinking molten copper juice for immeasurable kalpas; / For all the suffering retribution that sentient beings ought to receive due to being deranged by alcohol, / May I suffer it in their stead. / If I should again eat meat, may I fall into hell, / Swallowing hot iron pellets for immeasurable kalpas. / I vow that by this, to the utmost bounds of the future, / Enduring circumstances through my vows, my sense organs and sense fields will be purified; / Endowed with the ten patiences without relying on another's instruction, / Entering omniscient wisdom and according with the Tathāgata, / I will manifest and perform Buddha-work within the realm of inexhaustible sentient beings. / Respectfully I reflect: penetrating throughout the ten directions, / Adorned with myriad virtues, / May you bear witness for me in every land and in every dust particle. / Even if passing through the kalala stage in the womb I should forget my original vow, / I only pray that you confer your blessing and clear my clouds of delusion. / I bow my head, vast as space, with the utmost agony.
