Alas, this body!
For what were you born?
Sustained with food,
Covered with clothing,
Housed in a chamber,
Given medicine when sick—
Nurtured in a hundred ways, not lacking for a moment.
Yet it knows nothing of gratitude, turning instead to resentment and defiance:
The four elements torment each other, and the five viscera deceive one another.
This body is impermanent: with a single breath comes departure.
This body is impure: the nine apertures ever discharge.
A hundred thousand ulcers and boils, covered by a single sheet of thin skin!
This body is detestable; do not greedily cherish it.
You should cause this body to cultivate according to the Dharma:
The three kinds of pure contemplation, the sixteen contemplations.
Through the one practice without regression, return west to Peace and Sustenance.
Achieving unsurpassed wisdom: this is taking the mind as teacher.
