Chan Master Jinglin abandoned lecturing to practice Chan. When drowsiness and sleep confused his mind, there was a hanging cliff looking down thousands of fathoms, with a tree jutting out from its side; he used grass as a mat and sat cross-legged upon it. Single-mindedly tying his thoughts, this went on for days and nights. Because his terror of death was grave, his concentration was undivided; later he thereupon attained transcendent awakening.
