通達禪師。入太白山。不齎糧粒。饑則食草。息則依樹。端坐思玄。五年不息。因以本打塊。塊破廓然大悟。

Chan Master Tongda entered Mount Taibai without carrying provisions or grain. When hungry he ate grass, and when resting he leaned against a tree. Sitting upright contemplating the mystery, he did not cease for five years. When he struck a clod with a stick, the clod broke, and he had an open, great awakening.
