When Chan Master Hongzhi first served Danxia Chun, he happened to be questioning another monk on a gongan and unintentionally burst into loud laughter. Chun reproached him, saying: 'With that single burst of laughter, how many good things have you lost? Have you not heard it said: "To be absent for even a moment is no different from being a dead person"?' Hongzhi bowed twice and took it deeply to heart. Thereafter, even in a dark room, he never dared to be heedless.
