傑峯愚禪師。初參古厓石門。佩受法語。晝夜兀坐。不契。後參止嚴。舉不是心不是佛不是物。愈疑乃諸緣盡廢。寢食俱不覺知。如氣絕者。一夕坐至夜分。聞隣僧咏證道歌云。不除妄想。不求真。豁然如釋重負。有夜半忽然忘月指。虛空迸出日輪紅之句。

Chan Master Jiefeng Zhiyu first investigated under Guyan of Shimen, cherishing and upholding his Dharma words and sitting motionless day and night, yet without accord. Later he investigated under Zhiyan, who raised: 'It is not mind, it is not Buddha, it is not a thing.' Doubting all the more, he abandoned all conditions entirely, unaware of either sleep or food, like one whose breath had ceased. One night, sitting until the middle of the night, he heard a neighboring monk chanting the 'Song of Realizing the Way': 'Without eliminating deluded thoughts, without seeking the true.' Suddenly, as if setting down a heavy burden, he composed the lines: 'At midnight suddenly forgetting the finger pointing to the moon, / Out of empty space bursts the crimson sun.'
