中峯本禪師。侍高峯死關。晝夜精勤。困則以頭觸柱。一日誦金剛經。至荷擔如來處。恍然開解。自謂所證未極。彌益勤苦。咨決無怠。及觀流水。乃大悟。

Chan Master Zhongfeng Mingben attended on Gaofeng at the death barrier, diligent day and night. When exhausted, he struck his head against a pillar. One day, chanting the Diamond Sūtra, upon reaching the passage on 'shouldering the Tathāgata,' he had a sudden opening of understanding. Believing of himself that what he realized had not reached the ultimate, he became even more diligent and toilsome, inquiring for resolution without slackening. Upon gazing at flowing water, he attained great awakening.
