璧峯金禪師。參晉雲海。示以萬法公案。疑之三年。偶摘蔬次。忽凝然久之。海問子定耶。對曰定動不關。海問定動不關。是甚麼人。金以筐示之。海不肯。金撲筐於地。亦不肯。爾後工夫益切。脅不至席。一坐七日。一日聞伐木聲。大悟。

Chan Master Bifeng Baojin investigated under Jinyun Hai, who instructed him with the gongan of the ten thousand dharmas. He doubted it for three years. Once, while picking vegetables, he suddenly remained frozen in stillness for a long time. Hai asked: 'Are you in samādhi?' He replied: 'Neither samādhi nor movement pertains.' Hai asked: 'For whom do neither samādhi nor movement pertain?' Jin held up the basket to show him. Hai did not approve. Jin slammed the basket to the ground; Hai still did not approve. Thereafter, his practice grew even more earnest, his ribs never reaching the mat, sitting for seven days at a stretch. One day, hearing the sound of wood being chopped, he attained great awakening.
