波羅柰國。一人出家。自誓不得應真。終不臥息。晝夜經行。三年得道。又羅閱祇國。一沙門。布草為褥。坐其上。自誓云。不得道終不起。但欲睡眠。以錐刺髀。一年之中。得應真道。

"In the country of Vārāṇasī, a person went forth from home, vowing that if he did not attain arhatship, he would never lie down and rest. Walking day and night, in three years he attained the Way. Again, in the country of Rājagṛha, a śramaṇa spread grass as a cushion, sat upon it, and vowed: 'If I do not attain the Way, I will never rise.' Whenever he wished to sleep, he pierced his thigh with an awl. Within one year, he attained the path of the arhat."
