念佛一聲。或三五七聲。默默返問。這一聲佛。從何處起。又問這念佛的是誰。有疑只管疑去。若問處不親。疑情不切。再舉箇畢竟這念佛的是誰。於前一問。少問少疑。只向念佛是誰。諦審諦問。

Chant the Buddha's name once, or three, five, or seven times, and quietly ask back: 'Where does this one chant of the Buddha arise from?' Also ask: 'Who is this one chanting the Buddha?' Where there is doubt, just keep on doubting. If the questioning is not intimate and the feeling of doubt is not keen, raise again: 'After all, who is this one chanting the Buddha?' Toward the previous question, question less and doubt less; just turn toward 'Who is chanting the Buddha?' and closely scrutinise, closely ask.
