宋孝宗皇帝問。如何免得生死。對曰。不悟大乘道。終不能免。又問。如何得悟。對曰。本有之性。以歲月磨之。無不悟者。

Emperor Xiaozong of the Song asked: 'How can one avoid birth and death?' He replied: 'If one does not awaken to the Great Vehicle Way, one can never avoid it.' He asked again: 'How can one attain awakening?' He replied: 'With the inherent nature, if one polishes it over months and years, there is no one who does not awaken.'
