諸祖法語。今不取向上玄談。唯取做工夫喫緊處。又節其要略。以便時時省覽。激勵身心。次二諸祖苦功。後集諸經引證。俱倣此。

Of the Dharma words of the patriarchs, I do not here take up their abstruse discourses on the ultimate, but only select the critical points for applying effort, and have further abridged them to essentials to facilitate reviewing them at all times and spurring body and mind. The second section, on the bitter labors of the patriarchs, and the subsequent collection, on certifications from the sūtras, both follow this model.
