"You must not recite a huatou dully and stupidly, nor should you calculate and deliberate. Just at all times be indignantly determined to clarify this matter. Suddenly, you let go your hands at the edge of the cliff and do a turnabout; only then will you see the solitary brightness distinct and clear. Arriving here, you must not become attached; there is still a hammer-blow behind the brain, which is extremely difficult to penetrate. For now, investigate in this manner. Awakening on one's own without investigation perhaps occurred in high antiquity; aside from that, there has never been anyone who attained awakening without vigorous investigation. Venerable Youdan had people bring up 'Who is the one reciting the Buddha?' You do not need to use such methods now; just recite normally. Simply recite without forgetting, and suddenly when encountering objects and meeting conditions, you will hit upon the single phrase that turns you around; only then will you know that the Pure Land of Quiescent Light is not apart from this place, and Amitābha Buddha does not transcend one's own mind."
