"Good and bad seen during sitting all arise because during sitting, one does not arouse contemplation and does not think correctly, but only closes the eyes and sits quietly. When the mind lacks brilliance and intention flows along with objects, one is half-asleep and half-awake; or one greedily clings to quiet states as joy, causing various realms to appear. As for one who applies effort with the correct cause: when it is time to sleep, sleep a single slumber; as soon as you wake, immediately get up, shake up your spirits, rub your eyes, bite down on your molars, clench your fists tightly, and look straight at where the huatou lands. By all means do not follow along with torpor and sinking; do not attend to the slightest external object. In the midst of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, let not the single phrase 'Amitābha' be interrupted. You must believe that deep cause brings deep fruit, continuing straight until it recites itself without reciting. If you can make thought after thought not empty, you will surely recite until it is fused into one whole. In this very thought recognize it: the reciting person and Amitābha appear together with me."
