問。學人參求知識。或令提箇話頭。或令疑箇話頭。同耶別耶。答。纔舉話頭。當下便疑。豈有二理。一念提起。疑情即現。覆去翻來精研推究。功深力極。自得了悟。

"Question: When a student consults a spiritual guide, one either instructs him to bring up a huatou, or instructs him to doubt a huatou. Are these the same or different? Answer: As soon as one brings up the huatou, right then one doubts; how could there be two principles? When a single thought is brought up, the feeling of doubt appears immediately. Turning it over and over, examining and probing thoroughly, when the practice is deep and effort reaches the limit, one will naturally attain awakening."
