Whenever they leave their rows to offer incense, during the circumambulation with incense the cymbals are struck. The karmadāna comes forward in front of the incense burner, stands obliquely facing outward, and bows to the abbot to offer incense (the attendant holding the box). Next he bows to the two ranks. They come forward facing each other, turn around, and greet the abbot with folded hands (this is called "borrowing incense"); only then do they offer incense. (If it is an imperial holiday, or the memorial day of the Buddhas, patriarchs, or the master who transmitted the Dharma, there is no greeting with folded hands to borrow incense. If there is a west hall elder standing in the rank, he should offer incense first. Some say that because the head seat has already appeared in the world, he should offer incense first; this is incorrect. This is because he must leave the row together with the prior.)
