He is in charge of guests. Whenever government officials, donors, venerable elders, or celebrated and virtuous individuals from various regions visit, he welcomes them with incense and tea, promptly orders a postulant to announce them to the abbot's quarters, and then leads them up to meet him, still taking care of their lodging accommodations. If they are guests of secondary rank, he entertains them simply at the guest office; or if they wish to visit the abbot's quarters, the storehouse, or various dormitories, he orders a postulant to lead them there. As for the beds, curtains, utensils, lamp oil, firewood, and charcoal in the transient hall, he constantly keeps them in good order. Toward newcomers he must extend extra gentleness and care. When the karmadāna is on leave, he acts as his deputy. In front of the Sangha hall, he inspects the serving and replenishment of gruel and rice for guest monks. When a monk passes away, he checks the inventory together with the attendants; if a temporary guest dies, he presides over his funeral. Xuedou served under Dayang, and Chanyue served under Shishuang; both held this office, so it must not be neglected.
