4.26

先輩多以叢林老成之士為之。蓋能納忠救過羅致人才。內外庶事通變圓融。庶幾上下雍肅。如密菴有如侍者。而得松源世其家。東叟得昇首座。而家法益嚴。今諸方往往任後生晚輩。甚致敗德誤事。可不慎歟。

Predecessors mostly appointed experienced and mature elders of the monastic grove to this post, for they can offer sincere advice, remedy faults, recruit talented individuals, and smoothly adapt in both internal and external affairs, so that high and low are harmonious and dignified. For example, Mi'an had Attendant Ru, and thus obtained Songyuan to continue his lineage; Dongsou obtained Head Seat Sheng, and thus his family style became even stricter. Today, monasteries often appoint younger novices, frequently resulting in damaged virtue and ruined affairs; can one not be cautious?
