Having obtained ordination and received the śrāmaṇera precepts, one reports to the abbot on which day to enter the hall. Next, one notifies the head seat and the karmadāna. When the day arrives, after the mallet stroke at the end of the morning congee meal, the leader of the newly ordained initiates leads the assembly into the hall. Lining up before the sacred monk, they make a greeting with folded hands and insert incense. They fully spread their mats and make three prostrations. Leaving their niṣīdanas unfolded, they advance and say, 'We have had the fortune to enter the ranks of the Sangha and attach ourselves to the pure assembly. On this day we enter the hall; our humble hearts are overwhelmed with trembling and perspiration.' Making another three prostrations, they advance and say, 'At this present season, we respectfully inquire: May the hall head primary master and great upādhyāya, and the head seat and venerable assembly of great Chan masters, enjoy abundant blessings in your health and daily life!' Stepping back, they make three prostrations and gather their niṣīdanas. Turning around, they line up before the abbot and make a greeting with folded hands. Starting from the head seat's board, they begin patrolling the hall, going to the outer hall, returning again to the center of the inner hall, and after making a greeting with folded hands, they exit. Afterwards, they return to the hall, insert their identification tags, and join the assembly in Chan practice and recitation.
