When the abbot's quarters grants permission to hang up one's pack, the attendant office issues a notice down to the hall office. After the tea invitation and entering names in the platform register are concluded, [the new arrivals] are escorted into the communal dormitory. The karmadāna stands in the upper bay facing them; they make one prostration touching the mat. Moving to the lower bay, they again face each other and make one prostration touching the mat. The one who has hung up his pack speaks the words: '(Today, through great good fortune, I have received the honor of your kind hospitality. Deep in my heart, I am exceedingly grateful).' [The host] replies: '(The dormitory quarters are inconvenient; I pray you will graciously make do).' The senior trainee escorts the karmadāna out of the communal dormitory, where he stands to the right. The hall office postulant strikes the small wooden clapper in the dormitory three times. The dormitory host receives them, the ritual being entirely the same as before.
