If a noted virtue of great renown from the various quarters wishes to make a stay, revealing his intention in the course of conversation, the abbot retains him if he estimates that there is an individual dormitory available for him to reside in, and that the order of precedence in walking and sitting, above and below, can be comfortably arranged. On the following day, after attending tea, [the guest] reports, saying: '(I, so-and-so, for the sake of the great matter of birth and death, have come especially to rely upon and dwell with you),' whereupon he makes one prostration touching the mat. Either on another day or at that very time, [the abbot] gathers the two ranks and retired officers for tea. The abbot rises in person, burns incense, returns to his position, stands, and announces: '(The head seat of the west hall of such-and-such a place has not disdained to come here to keep company in our quiet seclusion. I trouble the two ranks and retired officers to escort him together to his dormitory).' The one who is being escorted steps forward and says: '(I have come especially to rely upon and dwell with you, and have been deeply graced by your acceptance).' The abbot, together with the two ranks and retired officers, escorts him to his dormitory. Facing each other, they make one prostration touching the mat, and escort the abbot out. The one being escorted takes the host's position, bows with folded hands to the attendants as they enter, greets them with folded hands, and escorts them out. He bows with folded hands to the two ranks and retired officers as they enter, and after greeting them with folded hands, he carries incense in his sleeve and goes to the abbot's quarters to bow and offer thanks. The hall office postulant leads him to the quarters of the two ranks and retired officers to return their courtesies. On another day, the abbot provides special hospitality with entertainment and holds a tea ceremony. For the tea invitations on the new and full moons, he ranks together with the retired officers.
